"The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down." Proverbs 14:1
God has often reminded me of this verse when I become frustrated and tired. I sometimes wonder if things will ever slow down. I wish that I could have more time alone, I wish I had more help around the house, I wish that dinner would cook itself.
In my frustration, I usually become bitter and that bitterness comes out to family in the form of complaining, impatience, and moodiness. I complain when my husband comes home about all that I have done that day, I am impatient with the kids when they are unwinding from their day, and my moods can range from completely content and happy with the way my day has gone to completely discontent and angry with the outcome of my day.
Sometimes, I hear God whispering, "Be wise...not foolish." God longs for us to be women that build our houses and families. He wants us to build homes that honor Him. Our homes should be a place that is filled with love, patience, and understanding.
Proverbs 24:3-4 says,
"By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures."
As women, we can allow our homes to be torn down by using words and actions that are not of God or we can choose to build houses based on the wisdom that God has given us. In seeking Him and His will for our families, we are building our homes on wisdom.
Understanding is something that is often overlooked in family life. In order to live together, we must understand each other. Make it a priority to really understand each of the people in your family. Know what they enjoy, what they don't enjoy, and what is going on in their lives. Understand your husband and what is going on his life. Some of us have toddlers, others have teenagers, and some have children that have grown and left the home. But whatever their age, every child longs to know that their parents understand them and respect them for who they are.
I don't know about you, but I love filling the rooms of my home with things that are beautifiul. I enjoy making my home special. God's word tells us that through knowledge we can fill the rooms of our home with rare and beautiful treasures. As Christians, our knowledge comes from knowing that our God and Father is everything that we will ever need. We can base everything that we believe and know on the fact that God loves us and wants the best for our lives.
Ask God to dwell in your home and breathe life into each room. Take some time this evening to pray over each room in your house. Ask God to give you the wisdom, understanding, and knowledge to build your home and your family up each and every day. Give Him opportunity to show you things that have been torn down and ask Him for the opportunity to build them back up.
Some Things to Think About:
Are you tearing your house down or building it up?
Do you really understand the people that live in your home?
Are you allowing God's wisdom to help you build your home each day?
